about

Really was no place we belonged; best was just getting lost in a song.
Megan's voice brings warmth and honesty right from the cold open (of course, perfectly on pitch). Will's plangent violin punctuates and accentuates the regret in the lyrics. Chris' harmonies elevate the proceedings to an almost sacred level. Meanwhile, the stuttering, stilted beat purposely keeps things a little off balance and from settling into the realm of easy listening. Like Becker and Fagan said - I cried when I wrote this song; sue me if I play too long (some may be more familiar with Prince's variant of that line). Those old tropes about exorcising loss through writing or music- they don't really apply here. I'll hang out with the unfortunate tree stuck beside the rising sea. But if you have any sorrow or solitude you want to let go of - come on, give it to me. I'll keep it with mine.
Writer Paul Milan tells the imaginary interviewer, "This one is about as honest and personal as I've ever written. 3 Rooms is maybe the only other song of mine that's as open. Amazingly, Megan conveys so warmly and powerfully what's behind the lyrics, though we never really talked about the song's inspiration or meaning. Chris too - on her harmonies (not background vocals), she really brings the feeling across."

lyrics

Guess I'll stay at home and watch the moon rise
Drink gin & tonics; talk to fireflies
What do you do when it's late in time?
That's what I do when you're on my mind

Remember you said you were born too late?
Would have run with the beats
Or tripped in the Haight
Really was no place we belonged
Best was just getting lost in a song

Take it away don't make me stay
We can't crawl back to yesterday
Sunlight on dust in an empty room
She left me behind way too soon

Sorrow rises, solitude sings
someone said these are precious things.
Hope won't disappoint it’s true,
If you lie to yourself your whole life through

A blue religion came today
Said it could take all this away
But I'm more rooted than any tree
Stuck beside the rising sea

Take it away don't make me stay
We can't crawl back to yesterday
There's a layer of dust in her empty room
She left this world way too soon

And I won't let go and I can't be free
Waves of grief keep pounding me
Through the endless cycle of love and loss
We learn too late that there's such a cost
